Maui County Bicycle Map

photo of Maui County Bicyle Map Tri-Isle RC&D Council, Inc. along with the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee, Office of Economic Development, County of Maui, and Technographics, completed the Maui County Bicycle Map.   The map features bicycling information on road suitability, bicycling laws, safety tips, emergency call boxes, tradewind patterns, grade changes, and camping locations.

Bob Franklin, a former bicycle racer and cartographer of Technographics used aerial photography which was shot from a hand glider and assembled by his computer for the final map.   The result was a view of state and county roads on a colorful map illustrating a flat presentation of the land and water.   The bicycle map is sold at bike shops for public education and safety.

In 1991, Maui County's Mayor, Linda Lingle, appointed a Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee to advise her of safety issues for bicycle riders.   This Committee implemented a four year bicycle safety program and focused on putting four to five foot wide paved bike lanes on key roads in main Maui urban centers.   This resulted in 15 miles of bike lanes.

Maui is truly a great place to cycle, and is now much safer due to these projects.   Bike riders can now bike from Wailea to Kapalua on safe bike lanes or shoulders for the full 40 mile distance.
