The TRI-ISLE RC&D PROJECT:
INVASION OF ALIEN FROGS

picture of Caribbean frog

Caribbean frog species have been located in greenhouses and nurseries on imported plants.   The alien frogs found their way to Maui about a year ago and have also been spotted on Big Island and Oahu.   These frogs are spreading from nurseries and are being transported by residential and resort landscaping plants from those nurseries.

The frog poses a threat by preying on native insects, snails, and arthropods.   The frog's painfully piercing calls pose a potential nuisance to local residents of Maui and resort guests.

The Maui Invasive Species Committee, a sub-committee of Tri-Isle RC&D Council, Inc. works to prevent new pest species from becoming established and spreading.   The partnership of private, state, county, federal government, and non-profit organizations seek to combat the threats to native ecosystems posed by alien invaders.
